Convert 3D files between STL, OBJ, 3MF, PLY and GLB. Convert one file or a whole folder at once, and resize on the way. Everything runs in your browser, so your files are never uploaded.
How to convert STL to OBJ
- Add your STLDrop one STL or several. Binary and ASCII STL files both work.
- Check OBJ is selectedOBJ is picked for you. Change the scale if your 3D app needs a different size.
- Download your OBJClick Convert to get an OBJ for Blender or any 3D app, or a ZIP when you convert several files.
Why convert STL to OBJ?
OBJ opens in almost every 3D program, including Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, ZBrush and game engines. It is a good choice when you want to edit, sculpt, paint or render a printable model.
Cleaner meshes
STL repeats every corner for each triangle. The OBJ stores each corner once and links the triangles together, so the mesh stays connected when you edit it.
Opening it in Blender
3D printing files use Z as up, while Blender's OBJ import expects Y. If the model lies on its side, set the Up axis to Z in the import options.
Blender works in meters, so a 100 mm model can look 1000 times too big. Scale it by 0.001 in Blender, or set the scale here to 0.1%.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my model lying on its side in Blender?
The OBJ keeps the Z-up direction used in 3D printing. In Blender's OBJ import options, set Up axis to Z and the model will stand the right way.
Why is my model huge in Blender?
STL numbers are millimeters and Blender reads them as meters. Scale the model by 0.001 in Blender, or set the scale to 0.1% before converting.
Will the OBJ file be bigger than the STL?
Usually not. OBJ is a text format, but it stores each corner of the model once instead of repeating it for every triangle, so it often ends up smaller than the STL.
Can I convert several STL files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like, and they come back together in one ZIP.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Your files are converted by your browser on your own device and never sent to our server. That also makes it fast, even for large files.
