How to turn a JPG into an STL
- Drop your JPG photo on the tool above, straight from your phone or camera.
- Pick Relief or Lithophane. Relief raises bright areas; Lithophane hides the photo until you light it from behind.
- Download the STL once the 3D preview looks right.
Relief or lithophane for photos?
Photos usually look best as a lithophane: the thickness changes create real shades of gray when a light shines through. A relief works better for high-contrast photos, silhouettes and drawings that you want to see in normal light. Try both with the Type switch; the preview updates instantly.
Getting a good result from a JPG
- Crop the photo before uploading so the subject fills the frame
- Brighten dark photos; very dark JPGs turn into a thick, flat model
- Turn on Smooth noise to hide JPEG compression blocks
- Medium detail is enough for most prints; High is for large lithophanes
Popular projects
- Family photo night lights and lamp shades (Cylinder shape)
- Pet portraits as curved desk lithophanes
- Memorial plaques and wedding gifts
- Landscape reliefs for wall art
